Your eyes are not less than a miracle of engineering. The different parts of the eyes work together to make a visual understandable to your brain.

A study by Ruth Williams MD, president-elect of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an ophthalmologist at the Wheaton Eye Clinic in Chicago states that people with light coloured eyes i.e. blue, grey and green are more likely to get vision-related issues. This is because the light coloured eyes are more light-sensitive.

The study shows white Americans with light coloured eyes are at higher risk of eye diseases than black Americans with dark coloured eyes. The sparsely of light-absorbing pigment in the eye is considered the factor behind this.

These genetic conditions are not under our control. But some safety measures at the initial stages can save you from bigger encounters later.

These are some of the eye care tips you must follow regularly:

1. Eat a Healthy Diet

The first step in keeping your eyes healthy is to give proper nutrition to your body. Include food with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A and vitamin E in your diet regularly. To maintain healthy eyesight naturally you must eat a healthy portion of green leafy vegetables, salmon, citrus fruits, and eggs. A healthy diet can also maintain your sugar level and blood pressure. These two can eventually lead to blindness.

2. Wear Protective Eyewear

To protect your eyes from injuries you must wear protection to your eyes. People who are into sports or work in some factory or construction site must wear protective eyeglasses. The harmful rays or dust particles can damage your eyes irreparably.

3. Quit Smoking

Smoking has way more harmful effects on our bodies than just affecting our lungs. Regular smoking can result in macular degeneration. Consult a doctor if you are trying to quit but couldn’t stick to it. The smoke can lead to cataracts and damage our optic nerve.

4. Be Physically Active

A healthy diet accompanied by regular exercise improves your blood circulation. This keeps the oxygen level intact and removes unnecessary toxins from your body. People who exercise every day have controlled sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. These health conditions can make your eyesight weak.

5. Handheld Devices at Normal Reading Distance

The introduction of technology to our lives took a toll on our health severely. You are using your digital devices at home or work for long hours every day. Your eyes are exposed to blue light constantly. These harmful rays can damage your eyes badly. You must keep your screen at the distance of 20” to 24”. Avoid working with the high brightness of the screen. Take a break every 20 minutes and close your eyes for 20 seconds. This method relaxes your eye muscles. There are also many other ways to protect your eyes while using computers.

6. Give Your Eyes Proper Rest

An eye test is a must for people of every age group. People generally believe that they don’t need to go for an eye test unless they encounter any eye-related issue. This is a wrong perception. You must visit an ophthalmologist every three months. This may help in the early detection of any serious eye illness. People with a family history should be cautious and take frequent eye tests.
